VCD Athletic’s under-13 team just missed out on the National Cup when they were beaten 1-0 in the final by Stokesley.

The boys secured their place at Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium after winning the southern England crown.

They overcame south west winners Herefordshire 4-0 in the semi-final thanks to goals from Luke Adams (2), Bobby Hoy and Harvey Marsden to set up a meeting with Stokesley.

VCD went into the final as favourites but were beaten by some controversial decisions and a well-organised defensive team who produced a great goal from a hotly disputed corner.

At the final whistle the boys were given a standing ovation from the big crowd.

Manager Terry Groom and coaches Jack Parkinson and Stuart Long were extremely proud of the boys’ achievement as VCD are now officially the second best team in the country.
