A WEAKENED Weston-super-Mare side were no match for visitors Welling United on Saturday.

Loui Fazackerley, back on top form, ran the show in the first half and an early free-kick from him required a desperate defensive header from Tom Evans.

Fazackerley and Charlie Sheringham then combined to cause further problems, but Weston goalkeeper Luke Purnell was grateful to be able to grab the loose ball.

At the other end, a shot from Sam Clark flew over the bar before Welling went close, first through a Sanchez Ming shot twhich was saved by Purnell, and then Tony Sinclair was just off target from another Fazackerley corner.

It came as no surprise when Welling went ahead eight minutes before the break.

Ming set off on a run across field, exchanged passes with Sam Hurrell and fired low into the bottom corner.

Hurrell shot over following more good work by Fazackerley and a Lee Protheroe free-kick, flicked on by Sheringham, almost presented a chance for Ryan Johnson.

Johnson increased the Wings’ lead on the stroke of half-time with a spectacular 25 yard shot as Hurrell’s pass sat up nicely for him.

Weston had a couple of opportunities early in the second half when Darren Mullings missed his kick in front of goal and Jack Compton forced the only save of the match from Welling custodian David Wilkinson.

The Wings dominated the rest of the match, although they did not create many clear cut opportunities.

Andy Ford had the luxury of being able to ease Sonny Cobbs back into league action following a long spell out injured, much to the delight of the travelling Welling supporters.

Sheringham completed the scoring with eight minutes remaining when he latched onto another fine Hurrell pass.

He initially flicked the ball over his marker, then over Purnell and finally into the roof of the net, all in one movement.
