Rutherford makes history at Cafe Royal

CRAY Valley & Orpington Amateur Boxing Club have recently taken part in a somewhat historical event when a member was selected to be part of the London team to compete against Sussex.

The event took place at the famous Cafe Royal London and was the last boxing event to be held at the birthplace of the Queensbury rules, using the venue’s own boxing ring which has been recently put up for auction.

Orpington fighter Oliver Rutherford, 21, put his name in the history books as a member of the London team which enjoyed a convincing 8-1 triumph over Sussex.

The club has also enjoyed success elsewhere, with Ryan Judd winning four titles in four weeks, starting with the south east London junior novice ABA title.

Judd went on to land the London title, the London v home counties contest and the London & home counties v southern counties crown.

He sadly lost out at the national final to a member of world amateur champion Frankie Gavin's club Hall Green.

Coach Oliver Rutherford was very happy with how Judd boxed, but felt he was a little star-struck after meetiing world champion Gavin, Amir Khan’s former trainer and Olympic gold medallist James Degale’s coach at ringside.

And despite it being a somewhat frequent occasion for coach Rutherford, who has trained many champions over the years, it proved to be a little over whelming for Judd.

However, with a record of 10 bouts and nine wins to his name, the club are confident Judd will go on to great things.

Cray Valley & Orpington ABC operate a no membership fee policy, with individual training sessions costing £2.50.
