Charlton Athletic 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday

SHEFFIELD Wednesday came from behind to send Charlton to their second consecutive Valley defeat.

Linvoy Primus was unfortunate not to put Charlton in front with an eighth minute header which came back off the post before being gathered by a relieved Lee Grant.

At the other end, Nicky Weaver was forced to get down low two minutes later to parry a Steve Watson free-kick.

The home side did take the lead on 19 minutes when Luke Varney met Nicky Bailey's free-kick and fired past Grant.

Varney almost made it 2-0 seven minutes later when he got past his marker, turned and shot against the post.

The rebound fell invitingly for Andy Gray but he blasted over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Sheffield Wednesday were back on terms six minutes before the break when Wade Small ran at the Addicks defence unchallenged before shooting low into the bottom corner.

And the game was turned on its head three minutes later after more poor defensive play from Mark Hudson allowed Marcus Tudgay to blast Wednesday in front from the edge of the area.

Varney tried his luck from long range with a shot which went wide in the first minute of the second half and Grant did well to keep out Lloyd Sam's strike on 53 minutes.

Sam's 74th minute low cross was almost converted at the back post by Hameur Bouazza but the Algerian shot into the side netting from six yards.

Varney had a shot blocked on the line by James O Connor immediately after his initial effort, which also took a kind deflection off a Wednesday defender.

And substitute Darren Ambrose tried his luck twice with shots outside the box as the Addicks went in search of and equaliser.

However, it failed to come and Alan Pardew's men were booed off the pitch by a clearly disgruntled Valley crowd.
