Goldberg steps up hunt

5:20pm Wednesday 20th August 2008

BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg is increasing his efforts to bring in some fresh faces in order to strengthen his midfield.

Despite recording their first win of the season over one of the promotion favourites Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday, Goldberg still feels his squad lacks enough depth to fulfil his ambitious target of finishing among the top 10.

He said: "We have a number of players on trial with us at the moment.

"We needed to strengthen our defence and we brought in Obaze, but now we could do with reinforcing our midfield.

"There is a chance there will be a mixture of loan and permanent signings. There may well be some news by the end of the week.

"I've always believed we can be up there challenging for a spot in the top 10 and if we can make a signing or two, it will help us to achieve this."

However, the Lillywhites manager admitted if new players do arrive, it is likely one or two may have to make way due to financial constraints.

Goldberg conceded: "If we do get some new bodies in, it will mean I have to juggle the squad around and possibly move a few out as well to stay within our budget."

The Bromley boss was delighted with the result against Havant and Waterlooville last weekend.

Bromley managed to see the game out after taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute through Loui Fazakerley's free-kick to secure an impressive victory.

The manager explained: "The Havant & Waterlooville match was a different game to the one against Bishop's Stortford.

"We were more composed, kept possession more successfully, cleared our lines better and got the ball forward to our strikers more often.

"The team created a lot more chances and I believe 1-0 was a true reflection of how the game was played."

Goldberg is keen to bring the confidence gained on Saturday into the Bank Holiday weekend with Bromley hosting Eastleigh on Saturday and then making the trip to newly-promoted AFC Wimbledon on Monday.

The Hayes Lane club will be out to ruin Eastleigh's and AFC Wimbledon's 100 percent records and the manager hopes his players can continue to improve.

He said: "If we play as well as we did on Saturday I honestly believe getting four points from the two matches is a realistic target.

"We need to start well in both games and make sure we take our chances.

"The lads have made great strides in the last week or so and are showing signs they are starting to gel.

"If we want to be up there at the end of the season, it is important to pick up points from matches like these."

Bromley have no new suspensions going into the two fixtures with David Obaze's three-match ban not kicking in until the home game against Worcester on August 30.

However, the Lillywhites are sweating over the fitness of Loui Fazakerley (sore knee) and Nic McDonnell (stiff hamstring).
