Havant & Waterlooville 0-1 Bromley
BROMLEY earned their first win of the season on Saturday with a much improved performance in Hampshire as Havant & Waterlooville slipped to their second home defeat in five days.
The visitors, showing much more commitment and determination than in their first two games, completely dominated the first half and it was something of a surprise they only led at the interval by Louis Fazakerley's 16th minute goal.
As early as the second minute, Bromley might have taken the lead as Fazakerley burst down the left.
His cross was met by Anthony Joseph whose downward header bounced up and away off the underside of the crossbar.
Warren McBean had goalkeeper Kevin Scriven scrambling with his shot three minutes later and on 10 minutes, Mark Corneille's through ball picked out Joseph whose rasping shot was beaten away by Scriven.
McBean was desperately unlucky on 14 minutes following Luke I'Anson's probing run.
The midfielder slipped a pass through to the striker but his fiercely struck shot was blocked by Ian Simpemba, who literally threw himself in front of the Bromley man.
An inevitable breakthrough came on 16 minutes.
Collins clearly played the ball with his hand, but the only debate was as to whether it was in or outside of the area.
The match official decided it was outside, but it made little difference as Fazakerley lifted his free-kick superbly over the defensive wall and into the top corner of the net.
Bromley continued to press forward and Fazakerley's free-kick on the half hour mark caused mayhem before being cleared and then another Joseph effort was again beaten away by Scriven.
The only time the home side threatened in the first period was when a quickly taken free-kick ran through to Rocky Baptiste.
However, the veteran striker hooked his shot wide of the far post from centre of goal.
On 38 minutes, Sam Gargen controlled Collin's through ball neatly to fire a low shot into Williams' arms.
Fazakerley started the second half with a free-kick from the left which dipped just the wrong side of the crossbar, but Bromley nearly gifted their hosts an equaliser on 51 minutes.
Goalkeeper Gareth Williams made a hash of a clearance, presenting Gary Holloway with an open goal.
But with the net unguarded, Holloway chipped his effort wide of a gaping goal.
Nic McDonnell should have done better on the hour mark, especially as he had done all the hard work in turning his marker, but with a clear sight of goal, he fired straight at Scriven and the goalkeeper made an easy save.
Havant upped the tempo in search of an equaliser and Holloway fired into the side netting from four yards before David Obaze, Steve Clark and Rob Gillman made timely tackles to prevent strikes on goal.
However, Bromley's defence held firm and the visitors might have added further goals in the closing stages.
I'Anson's snap shot was turned around by a diving Scriven and McDonnell weaved his way around Simpemba before shooting straight at the keeper.
In the dying seconds, a Fazakerley corner was partially punched by Scriven, leading to a pinball session which ended by the goalkeeper diving to save on the line.
