Cray Wanderers 3-2 Goldalming Town
Cray started their 2008-09 campaign with three points in a dramatic game at Hayes Lane.
The Wands had to battle for the last half hour with only ten men after defender Mark Willy was dismissed for a second yellow card offence.
Cray couldn't have hoped for a better start to the afternoon, going two goals up through Steve Aris and Tommy Whitnell on 5 and 9 minutes.
Godalming were not easy to subdue, with 'keeper Matt Mann making some fine saves and striker Kenny Ojokwu heading home after 20 minutes.
Cray's new striker Shawn Beveney looks to be a significant addition to the squad this season, and he finished superbly in the 56th minute after using his strength to burst through a crowd of defenders who were barring the way to goal.
Beveney almost netted an even better goal in the final minute, but at the end of a mazy run from the halfway line he struck the ball over the bar in front of an empty net.
Godalming made it 3-2 with a goal from Damien Matthews in time added on.
Cray travel to play Metropolitan Police on Tuesday 19 August (7.45pm) with Tyrone Sterling an injury doubt after he sustained a bad cut in a clash of heads with Cray defender Colin Luckett.
