Bromley 1-2 Maidenhead United
VISITORS to Hayes Lane on Saturday Maidenhead United came from behind to deservedly win the opening fixture in the Blue Square South campaign.
The workmanlike Berkshire side penned Bromley back for long periods throughout the game, particularly in the second half when the home side seemed to completely lose their way.
Maidenhead might have taken the lead on four minutes when Lee Newman was put through, but Gareth Williams was quickly off his line and the striker screwed his shot wide.
Just one minute later, Bromley opened the scoring.
Jermaine Hinds upended Karl Murray on the edge of the area and Loui Fazakerley stepped up to curl a sweet free-kick around the wall and beyond the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Shane Gore.
The lead only lasted seven minutes.
Jack Haverson conceded a free-kick on the right touchline, which was headed for a corner.
When the flag kick came over, Williams was slow to react and the unmarked Richard Pacquette stabbed the ball forward from within the six-yard box for Newman to turn and fire past a static Williams.
Maidenhead should have taken the lead on 24 minutes when Pacquette was just wide with a diving header from Ashley Smith's cross.
Nic McDonnell was unlucky at the other end when he brought down a long throw-in, only to see his shot on the turn blocked by a defender.
The second half belonged to Maidenhead as they stepped up a gear and, at times, ran Bromley ragged.
Dale Binns ran unchallenged from the halfway line before crossing to Pacquette, but the striker somehow managed to balloon over the bar from six yards with Williams stranded on the far side of goal.
The winning goal came on 65 minutes from the penalty spot when Ashley Smith's cross from the left was needlessly handballed by Steve Clark.
Clark was yellow-carded before Newman stepped up to send Williams the wrong way with a firmly-struck shot for his second goal of the afternoon.
Pacquette put a fierce cross wide and Newman went close on two occasions before being substituted 12 minutes from time.
Substitute Warren McBean wasted the chance of an equaliser on 85 minutes for Bromley and in the final minute, McBean broke away before squaring to McDonnell, whose shot was deflected for a corner.
Goalkeeper Williams did well to keep the score intact in injury time as he came out to block a clean strike from Pacquette, but he was also booked for berating the assistant referee for not flagging for offside against the Maidenhead player.
