Cold winds and torrential rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Dartford Harriers Athletic Club's teams over the weekend.
In a distinctly uncomfortable start to the season, the Harriers' under-20 mens team won a resounding victory over seven other clubs at Woodford Green on Sunday, while the ladies
finished second in their match.
The points were, men: Dartford 316, Havering 260, Thurrock 213, Basildon 172, Bexley 164, Woodford Green 158, Orion 63, Southend 53.
Ladies: Woodford Green 339, Dartford 204, Ilford 149, Thurrock 132, Orion 39, Southend 32.
In the men's match, Liam Lucas and Phillip Murphy had little chance to feel the cold, covering nine events between them. Liam's victory in the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.29secs, gained him a Grade 1 AAA Standard Award. Phillip was second in the B- string in a time of 20.7secs.
Stephen Stapley also had a busy day, competing in four events. He dominated the javelin, winning with an excellent personal best of 40.59m.
Best performances in the A-string events: Chris Fox, pole vault, 3.2m second (AAA Grade 3 Award), Russell Bethel, hammer, 31.27m third, shot 11.99m first (AAA Grade 3 Award), and second in the discus with 32.15m.
Lucas, long jump, 5.89m, third, Stapley, triple jump, 12.85m; second, Daniel Crawford, 100m, 11.8secs, fifth; Jimmy Cross 400m, 54.3secs, third; Andrew Pickett, 800m, 2mins 4secs, first; Terry Hawkey 1,500m, 4mins 10.43, second; Tom Campey 3,000m 9mins 35.24secs, third; Murphy, fourth place in the high jump with 1.6m.
B string events: Phillip Parkinson pole vault 2.6m, first; Lucas, javelin 2818m, second; Fox, high-jump 1.5m, first; Cross 800m 2mins 10.39, first;. Picket, 1,500m 4mins 13.17 first; Hawkey 3,000m, 9mins 56.81, first.
Relays: 4x100m 47.8secs, first (Crawford, Stapley, Lucas & Murphy), 4x400m 3mins 39.17secs, first (Pickett, Hawkey, campey & Cross).
Natasha Forgie was the star of the ladies match, winning the accolade, Athlete of the Match, for her hammer personal best of 39.8m.
Alison Williams won the B-string with a throw of 18.16m, Sheryll Baker and Lauren Barlow produced a solid performance in the 800m, coming second in both strings, Baker in 2mins 30.31 and Barlow in 2mins 33.59. Second place also went to Claire Capon in the 100m, clocking 14.03secs.
Forgie, javelin, 12.39m, discus, 14.9m, Hannah Hines, long jump 3.64m. The team of Michelle Sword, Hines, Capon and Forgie were second in the 4x100m relay in 57.55secs.
Elsewhere, Dartford AC Ladies finished third out of five teams in the first Southern Women's Track and Field League Division 3, at Thames Valley.
