Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet claimed he did not see what led to Lee Bowyer being sent off - but insisted there were no "hard feelings" between both clubs' staff.

As Charlton searched for the equaliser during six minutes of added time, a ball was thrown onto the pitch from the away team's dugout in a bid to waste time.

Referee Matthew Donohue showed Clotet a yellow card for the incident before he brandished Bowyer a straight red.

While Bowyer said he was just returning the ball back to the opposition's technical area, Clotet insisted he did not see what Bowyer did as his focus was on the pitch.

He said: "I don't know what happened with Mr Bowyer but, for me, I was focusing on the game. One ball left the technical area and went inside the pitch, so the ref [came over] and asked if I could not identify who was responsible then I would take the booking.

”I said, 'Okay, I will take the booking'."

When asked whether he told Mr Donohue who was responsible, he added: "No. It's my responsibility in the end and, obviously, I don't know what happened.

"In the end, there were a lot of emotions in the game. I don't know what happened on Mr Bowyer's side, I think it had nothing to do with that, but it was a tough, tough 10 minutes and there were a lot of emotions from everyone."

Clotet hoped Bowyer did not take the injury-time antics "the wrong way" before heaping praise on the Addicks boss.

Asked whether there were any hard feelings between the two clubs' staff, he said: "Oh no, absolutely not, because I think it was just something that was a coincidence. If Mr Bowyer took it in the wrong way then I'm sorry.

"I do have have a lot of respect for him. First, because of what he means to Birmingham and, second, because what he did last season - and what he's doing with his team this season - is putting a stamp of football in this team that I do like and I do enjoy."
