With just six league goals scored from open play, many will assume that Roy Hodgson will be looking for a goal-scorer in the January transfer window.

This assumption is further justified with injuries to the attacking trio of Christian Benteke(knee), Connor Wickham(thigh) and now Wilfried Zaha who picked up a hamstring injury in the 3-1 defeat at Chelsea.

Roy Hodgson however, said that there was no guarantee that the club would be dipping in to the clubs’ coffers when the window opens in eight weeks’ time.

“We have a lot of injuries and we aren’t blessed with options up front, but by the time January comes around they might be playing,” said Hodgson.

Palace recruited Vicente Guaita and Max Meyer for free in the summer, with Jordan Ayew arriving on loan and Cheikou Kouyate the only player to arrive for a fee, so Hodgson will know any delving in the transfer market will be up to Palace Chairman Steve Parish.

“I’ve not had any real discussions with the owner about money available in January. There wasn’t any in the summer and whether that’s changed I couldn’t tell you.

“One thing is for certain though, we don’t have a very big squad but I have a squad which is very competitive. A squad which despite the poor return of points, has actually played some very good football in the first part of the season.”

The rumour mill has already begun to turn as Victor Moses and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were linked with Selhurst Park as well as Danny Welbeck before suffering a long-term injury.

Hodgson was keen to state that the club would not be going in to the market to increase squad numbers, and they’d only be interested in improving the quality of the team,

“We aren’t going to make the team better by signing from other teams’ reserves or subs or players who aren’t breaking in to teams.

“We have to find players who are better than what we’ve got, and I believe the players we’ve got aren’t that bad and they show that week after week.”
