Jake Forster-Caskey wants Lyle Taylor to repeat last season’s red-hot form to aid Charlton’s promotion push.

The Addicks’ summer signing has netted twice in as many pre-season games, including the winner against Welling on Saturday.

Taylor, 28, scored 18 goals for AFC Wimbledon last term, which earned him a move to the Valley last month.

Charlton midfielder Forster-Caskey said: “He’s added goals already. He’s a good character, he’s making everyone work harder.

“I’ve only played with him in a couple of games, but I enjoy playing with him.

“He’s got on the scoresheet twice and that’s the main thing as a striker to score goals and he does that.

“He told me before the Welling game that he scored 18 goals [last season].

“If he can do that again then that will help us because goals get you promoted – and we need to score more goals.

“We knew that last year, it’s just the facts, we need to. Everyone is happy that he’s in the building.”

Taylor has been Charlton’s only signing of the summer so far.

Caretaker boss Lee Bowyer hopes to complete a deal for a midfielder today - and Forster-Caskey admits the squad needs more players.

He added: “As players that [signings] is not our job to worry about, our job is to go on the pitch and do the best we can.

“I’m sure the club will take care of that. We go on the pitch and try to improve ourselves and get ready for the season.

“We probably do need numbers, you can probably tell it’s a bit light. It’s not our job to bring players in, but we’d be stupid to say we’re not light.

“We are a little bit but I’m sure the club is working hard behind the scenes to get that right.”

Charlton have experienced Football League players Simon Dawkins and Elliott Ward on trial.

The Addicks’ shortage in midfield has given young duo George Lapslie and Taylor Maloney the chance to impress.

And Forster-Caskey believes Charlton are in a “positive” and “exciting” place ahead of the new season.

He said: “They [young players] have all got a great future so this is their time to shine.

“They’ve got to do what we’ve got to do because there are no guaranteed starters in this team.

“Dawks [Dawkins] is obviously in, he’s done really well. He’s been brilliant around the place. The new players and young boys have been brilliant.

“Igor [Vetokele] has come back, I met him for the first time when he came back, and he looks really sharp.

“So it’s a positive and exciting time for everybody because all these players have improved us already.”
