Simon Dawkins and Elliott Ward will not be on trial with Charlton for the whole of pre-season.

Midfielder Dawkins and defender Ward are free agents after leaving San Jose Earthquakes and Blackburn, respectively, last season.

Both players featured in Charlton’s 2-1 win against Welling today.

Addicks caretaker boss Lee Bowyer said: “Simon Dawkins came and trained with us in the back-end of last season. We like what we see. He’s a good player, very technically gifted and has great awareness.

“We need to see him in games. He came out to Portugal, played against QPR and today was a good workout for him.

“We’ve got two more games on Tuesday and Wednesday so we’ll keep looking at him. With Ward, he started on Monday. He’s only had a couple days training with us.

“Obviously he played today and again, you need to see him in games. It’s about the games. They're both on trial and we’ll make the right decision for the club.

“They won’t be in for the whole of pre-season because that’s not fair. They’re going to be here and we’re going to tell them one way or another.”

Dawkins boasts Championship experience from his three-year spell with Derby, while 33-year-old Ward has had recent spells with Bournemouth, Blackburn and MK Dons.

Bowyer revealed another trialist will link up with his squad on Monday.

He added: “There are some trialists that will come in and stay and some will go. We’ll be honest with them and we’ll see.

“We’ve got one trialist coming in on Monday.

“He’s a midfielder, one of these siting midfielders. I’m sure you’ll know who it is on Tuesday.”
