Lee Bowyer says Charlton will know by Monday if they’ve made their second summer signing.

Lyle Taylor has been the Addicks’ only capture of the transfer window so far.

Valley caretaker boss Bowyer told News Shopper: “We’re waiting on an answer.

“They asked for 48 hours and they said ‘can we stretch it for another 48?’ yesterday.

“So we’ll know by Monday whether that fella is coming.”

Taylor scored the winner in Charlton’s 2-1 pre-season victory over Welling today. He is competing with Josh Magennis, Nicky Ajose and Igor Vetokele for a starting place.

But the Addicks’ squad is small - especially in midfield - Jake Forster-Caskey and Joe Aribo are the club’s only senior midfielders.

Bowyer said: “I know I only need a few missing pieces of the puzzle, not much. The lads that were here last season, the loan lads that have gone back, there’s not much we need to add to this squad.

“We’ve brought in Lyle Taylor, he should've scored one or two more today, but I think he’s added a lot up front to us, you've got Igor who’s like a new signing, he’s something different who we never had in the building last season.

“We’ve got good strikers up top competing for places with Nicky Ajose, Josh Magennis and Karlan [Grant], who I’ll probably be looking to play up there as well.

“Do we need to strengthen in certain areas? For sure. We need to strengthen in midfield. We've only got two senior midfielders in Jake Forster-Caskey and Joe Aribo at the moment.

“We need to bring in a horrible midfielder to give it to ones who can play. That’s what we’re short of and trust me, we’re trying along with the owner, to make that [signing].”
