Lee Bowyer wants the Charlton job on a full-time basis next season.

But he has warned the Addicks’ prospective owners: I’ll only stay if I’m offered the manager role.

Unpopular Valley owner Roland Duchatelet is close to selling the club to Australian businessman Andrew Muir, who watched the club's first leg loss at the Valley on Thursday.

Charlton’s season ended with a play-off semi-final defeat to Shrewsbury today, losing 2-0 on aggregate.

Bowyer, who took temporary charge of an Addicks side five points off the top six in March, said: “I was told [I’ll be in charge] until the end of the season, the end of the season is done.

“I don't know where that leaves me. I’ll be going on holiday now and whatever is meant to be will be.

“But at this present time, the last thing I’m thinking about is where I’m going to be. We’ve just lost.

“Of course [I’d like to stay], I love the club. I wouldn't be here now if I didn't. I’d like to stay but I’m not in control of that.

“There will be no talks next week, I’ll just come back in pre-season and see what’s happening unless stuff happens during the summer and I find out before then. You guys [the press] will probably find out before me.

“[I’d have to stay] as manager. If I’m going to stay then it’ll be as manager because if not then I won’t be staying. That’s 100 per cent. That’s the only way I’ll stay.”

Bowyer believes his squad of players can bounce back and achieve promotion next term.

He added: “There’s potential. Would we need to make signings? For sure. We need a few players.

“We’re bringing kids off the bench, Shrewsbury brought on men. We brought on Stephy Mavididi and Sullay Kaikai.

“They gave us everything but physically, they brought on their striker [Stefan Payne] and he was strong.

“Our young players are exciting and good to watch. [But] I think you’ve got to have more of a balance.”
