Lee Bowyer says Mark Marshall was dropped against Shrewsbury for tactical reasons.

Marshall, 31, hit form towards the end of the regular season, but was an unused substitute in Charlton’s 1-0 play-off semi-final first leg defeat to Shrewsbury last night.

Bowyer opted for Ben Reeves, who struggled to have an impact on the game, to occupy the right side of his midfield diamond.

“I didn't want to play with a wide man at home,” the Charlton caretaker boss said.

“Shrewsbury’s left-back is a centre-half so I tried to match them because they play a three in midfield. I tried to match that up and leave the left-back because he wasn't going to hurt us.

“Marshall can’t play in the role that Reeves plays. He’s an out-and-out winger, an old fashioned winger that gets the ball wide and runs [at his defender].

“So that’s the reason why Marshall didn't start.”
