Millwall midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe believes the squad rues the chances which were missed to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

The former Manchester United man featured from start to finish in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa during the Lions' last game of the season.

However, results elsewhere for Derby County and Preston North End elsewhere eradicated any small chance left for Neil Harris’ men to get sixth place.

Tunnicliffe told News Shopper: “It’s been a great season overall but with two games to go, and you’re sat in sixth, all you need are a good few results to get you in there.

“If you look at the games – Fulham, Middlesbrough, and Villa – it was always going to be tough but we gave it our all and felt we came up short.

“I think everyone is disappointed after the Middlesbrough game, everyone was bitterly disappointed that the season was pretty much over barring a massive goal difference swing.”

Defeats to Fulham and Middlesbrough pushed Millwall down to eighth, where they remained, following a huge 17-match unbeaten run.

Now Derby County, who took sixth in the end, will host Slavisa Jokanovic's men at Pride Park on May 11 in the first leg.

But overall he remains pleased with how the Lions' campaign transpired after being tipped for relegation back to League One.

Tunnicliffe added: “To give the fans something to go home and cheer about, on the last day of the season and get over 70 points, is remarkable I think.

“We’ll look back and [think] it’s been a great season, considering we were relegation favourites at the start of the year.

“We can all be proud of what we’ve achieved this year.”
