Charlton moved closer to securing a play-off spot after beating Blackburn at the Valley today.

The Addicks survived a second-half onslaught from already-promoted Rovers as Jason Pearce’s goal proved to be the difference.

Plymouth’s late win over Rotherham means the play-off race will go down to the final day of the season.

Charlton caretaker boss Lee Bowyer made one enforced change to the team that beat Portsmouth last weekend with Mark Marshall replacing the injured Tariqe Fosu.

But the big team news came from the bench. Retiring Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson made the 18-man squad for what could be his final playing appearance at the Valley.

In front of a raucous crowd, which totalled at 17,310, the Addicks took a 19th-minute lead with the game’s first chance. A free-kick wasn't properly dealt with by reserve goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler and Ahmed Kashi’s thunderous shot cannoned off Pearce and into the net.

Rovers failed to create any clear-cut openings, but made Charlton sweat at times in the first-half. Ben Amos had to tip a Charlie Mulgrew corner away from goal as it looked to be heading straight in before Ezri Konsa’s outstanding last-ditch challenge stopped Dominic Samuel from pulling the trigger.

Inbetween those nervy moments, Lewis Page was lucky not to see red following a nasty sliding tackle on Leutwiler. With 3,000 travelling fans pleading for the left-back’s day to be cut short, referee Robert Jones brandished a yellow card.

Amos, not for the first time in recent weeks, came to Charlton’s rescue seconds into the second-half. He was quick off his line to thwart Richie Smallwood after the midfielder worked his way into the box.

Page, who has been plagued with injuries since signing for the Addicks last year, had to be stretchered off after throwing himself at Smallwood’s shot.

Blackburn were piling on the pressure as Amos made two superb saves in quick succession to deny Jack Payne. He scrambled across his line to stop the Huddersfield loanee’s goal-bound strike and then somehow kept Charlton’s lead intact by stopping him at point-blank range.

The second-half chances continued to fall Blackburn’s way. Samuel directed a Mulgrew corner on to the bar in the 78th minute before Amos’ strong right hand denied the striker moments later.

Charlton’s fighting spirit shone through late on as Jake Forster-Caskey lost the ball near the halfway line, but the midfielder raced back to win possession for his team.

Forster-Caskey then saw a powerful strike saved by Leutwiler on 86 minutes as Charlton wrapped up another vital three points.
