Charlton caretaker boss Lee Bowyer has defended Jason Pearce after his error in Bristol Rovers’ goal today.

Ben Reeves cancelled out Kyle Bennett’s opener to ensure Bowyer’s unbeaten start in management remained intact.

Pearce, who had been almost faultless since his return from a long injury lay-off, undercooked a header back to Ben Amos, and Bennett snuck in to poke the ball home.

Bowyer said: “We are human beings - we all make mistakes. Pearce has been solid in the last three games and he’s made a mistake today.

“But there were a lot of good things he did after that to make up for it.

“He puts his body on the line every time he steps on to the pitch. It’s done now and we’ll just move on.”

Charlton looked likelier than Rovers to grab a winner in the second-half. Michal Zyro was inches away from connecting with Lewis Page’s cross from close-range before Joe Aribo’s volley was cleared off the line late on.

Charlton occupy the last play-off spot after Portsmouth, Scunthorpe and Peterborough failed to win.

Third-placed Shrewsbury are the only club to beat Rovers at the Memorial Stadium this year.

And despite that, Bowyer was still disappointed that his team couldn't come away with three points.

He added: “We were sloppy in the first-half. They were first to everything, they won every second ball.

“I thought we weren't the same side in the first-half but second-half, we stepped it up again and created a few chances.

“On another day, we would've won that game but overall, I’m disappointed to be leaving with a point. It makes Tuesday’s game [against AFC Wimbledon] even more important.

“We should've won. Whatever game we’re in and whatever ground we’re at, we’re looking to win.

“Was I happy with the point? Not really. We created enough chances to win the game - and there was only one team that was going to win it in the second-half and I thought that was us.

“Obviously a point is better than nothing but I’m disappointed.”
