Josh Magennis has explained why he deleted his Twitter account.

The Charlton striker was on the receiving end of online abuse from some Addicks fans during his 14-game goal drought earlier this season.

Magennis, who scored his third goal in four games against MK Dons on Saturday, told News Shopper: “There are so many things that you can see on Twitter without it affecting you.

“My mum always said ‘if you don't want to see it, don't look at it’. So the easiest thing for me was just to come off and leave it for a while.

“I’ll probably end up going back on it in a couple of months. I just don't need to keep seeing it all, I’ve got my Instagram and that’s all I need.

“Social media is very helpful in a lot of avenues. But sometimes for me, it’s easier to take a step back and maybe not get caught up in it.

“We've done a lot of video analysis with the guys at Charlton and I’m just concentrating Monday to Friday and it seems to be working. Whether or not I go back on [Twitter], I don't know.

“My wife says ‘you’re not always on your phone, you’re not walking around into doors now’ so she's happy I’ve got rid of it. Twitter isn't a main part of my life. I’m just looking forward to next week [against Shrewsbury].”

Magennis, 27, is Charlton’s top scorer with eight goals.

And if he scores the goals to fire the Addicks to promotion, he will surely prove his critics wrong once and for all.

Magennis added: “I’ve always had doubters throughout my career. Obviously a striker is there to score goals but I know my place in this team and what the gaffer expects of me.

“Of course he expects me to score goals, but he expects me to do a multitude of other stuff. When you don't score, and you don't score for the amount of time that I didn’t, you’ll have people asking questions.

“You can’t take it [the abuse] personally. Football can be up and down, it’s a rollercoaster. You're never in the middle.

“If there are doubters, you've just got to keep your head down, work hard and try to prove them wrong. The form I’m in at the minute, I feel great.

“People still have doubts over Ronaldo and Messi so with me, you've just got to take it on the chin. The support I've had since I've come here has been great.”

Magennis’ barren spell in front of goal could have been down to fatigue.

Up until the end of January, the Northern Ireland international was Charlton’s only senior striker.

But now, Nicky Ajose has returned and loanees Michal Zyro and Sullay Kaikai can play as a number nine.

When asked whether the competition for places has given him a boost, Magennis said: “Yeah of course.

“Listen, you know you're the only striker there, but when you're the only striker you've got to take that trust the gaffer has in you and you've just got to go with it. I’m trying to do that.

“When the team’s doing well and scoring goals, it’s not easier, but you know it’ll be hard for the gaffer to change the team.

“If you're playing and you're not doing well, 60, 70 or 80 minutes, your number could go up at any time.

“You've got to stay on top, make sure you're working as hard as you can Monday to Friday and then when Saturday comes, you show the hard work you've been doing in the previous week.”
