Millwall are in talks to sign Derby defender Jason Shackell on loan.

Den boss Neil Harris is keen to strengthen his defence after admitting Byron Webster is likely to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

Webster, 30, has stepped up his rehabilitation by training outside with medical staff, but is not close to a first-team return.

Shackell, who joined the Rams for £3m in 2015, hasn't made a league appearance in over a year. The 34-year-old would add Premier League and Championship experience to Millwall’s backline.

Harris told News Shopper: “Realistically, Byron’s not going to be fit until next season.

“If we can get him back on the training pitch this season then that will be a massive boost for us. If there was any chance of involvement then that would be fantastic.

“Just having him back on the grass is a massive boost for everybody. He's a big character with such a great personality.

“To have him back with a smile on his face, running around the pitch, it’s good to see.

“As ever, he’s attacking the work outside like everything else he’s done since he’s been injured with courage and desire. What a good personality for me to have at the football ground.”
