Karl Robinson insists Ricky Holmes wants to play for Charlton amid speculation regarding his future.

There have been reports that the Addicks’ star man could move on due to the club’s failure to land transfer targets this month.

Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet is trying to sell the club and it’s having an impact on transfers. Stephy Mavididi, who joined on loan from Arsenal last week, could be the first and last signing of the January transfer window.

Speaking about Holmes, who’s scored six goals this season, Robinson said: “Since yesterday, there’s been no formal approach.

“He’s happy, he wants to play for the club, if we get a bid then it’ll be ‘what does it do for my family?’ and that’s basically where it’s at.

“You’d have to make sure that someone comes in if that [Holmes’ exit] ever materialised. It depends what club it is and the motive.

“Ricky and I have got one of the best relationships I’ve ever had with a player. We managed to secure him in the summer, but if the opportunity came to play in the Premier League or at the top of the Championship, you don't know who the clubs may be.

“But what I won’t do is sell the player just for money. I’m sticking to my guns on that. I’d need a replacement immediately and then we’ll want to use the money to strengthen the squad.

“That’s my whole crux of the conversation and I need to be trusted with that. If I’m not trusted then I’m not the person for the job.

“He signed his contract and scored a lot of goals. He was sensational when we had everyone fit. He did what he said he’d do. Ricky is still motivated, I had a conversation with him on the phone yesterday.

“This won’t affect him but at the same time it needs to be sorted soon. You can’t play with people’s lives.

“At the end of the day, he’s got a young daughter who’s an absolute credit to him. She comes in every now and then and I’ve got to know her over recent months and she is his sole aim.

“But by saying that, he loves being part of the Charlton family.”
