Millwall were not disgraced in a hard-fought game against a team two tiers above them last season.

With a string of players recently strutting their stuff in the Premier League, Hull City could not get through a tough Millwall defence.

And following his error at Sunderland on Saturday, keeper Jordan Archer deserves credit for a number of brilliant saves, including a diving block just before half-time to stop a shot from Hull’s Kevin Stewart, who belted it from the edge of the area.

Millwall looked to be missing the attacking midfield talents of Jed Wallace who is serving a three-match ban, as well as injured playmaker-midfielder Shaun Williams.

But the Millwall attacks began to mount after 51 minutes when Steve Morrison came off the bench (for Tom Elliot ). Another key substitution was Fred Onyedinma, on for Aiden O’Brien, on 61 mins, who set alight the right wing with crosses into the box.

Millwall looked sure to score on 66 minutes when Lee Gregory’s header was parried away by the Hull keeper Allan McGregor for a corner. That fell for another perfect header for captain Shaun Hutchinson but again it was parried by Scottish international McGregor. Seconds later Shane Fergusson had a shot saved as The Den lept to its feet in anticipation.

Millwall fans again had their head in their hands on 89 minutes when Lee Gregory was right on goal but skied it over the bar.

A share of the spoils seemed the fairest result for two teams whose defences were solid but whose strikers couldn’t hit the mark.
