Ben Reeves hasn't trained with Charlton since starring in their midweek Checkatrade Trophy win over Crawley.

Reeves, 25, scored his first Addicks goal against the League Two side, before being replaced in the 54th minute.

The Charlton summer signing continues to build up his fitness after missing pre-season.

He is likely to start on the bench at Oldham, with Robinson confirming the Northern Ireland midfielder has been absent from training in recent days.

The Valley boss, who worked with Reeves at MK Dons, said: “He was really stiff and sore on Wednesday and Thursday - he didn't train.

“I don't think he is going to train today - he’ll definitely travel. But we were talking yesterday with the medical staff and when people don't have a pre-season, I don't think some players understand how important it is.

“Reevesy is disappointed that he didn't have a proper pre-season but that’s his fault. If he had a proper pre-season, he’d be part of a very fit and efficient team.

“He covered something like 8km in 54 minutes, most players over 90 minutes cover eight to 12, so it just shows you he is a real high energy player.

“I watched the Crawley game back and when you see the goal, it’s what you see in Ben Reeves and it’s why I really like him. He had no space on the edge of the box, and probably had two or three yards with very little back lift - it was power and precision in relation to his ball striking - and that’s what he brings.

“Sometimes you need that when your fluidity is not quite there - a little bit of magic from somebody, out of nothing. He’s a little magician in some ways.”

Reeves suffered numerous injuries during his time with the Dons, most notably in their Championship campaign, which ended in relegation.

Robinson is a big admirer of the playmaker, and is confident of putting his player’s injury hell behind him.

He added: “He trained on Monday and the lads were laughing because some of things he does with the football are incredible. He’s certainly a joy to work with. He’s so talented.

“But the most important thing - his injury and fitness levels have to support that talent and he’s had one or two injuries and the medical team have looked at one or two components, biomechanically, and we think we can improve him.

“I always knew bringing him here would be a risk with the injuries he’s had, but I felt that the team here and the resources we've got, we can support the growth of his career.”
