Charlton star Ricky Holmes reckons Josh Magennis will score 20 goals this season.

Magennis netted four times in pre-season, with two clinical strikes coming in the 6-1 win over Ipswich on Saturday.

Addicks boss Karl Robinson has said he wants to bring in another striker to rival Magennis, Lee Novak and Tony Watt.

But Holmes believes the Northern Ireland forward, who bagged 10 goals in his debut season at the Valley, can double that tally in the 2017/18 campaign.

He said: “You’ve seen Josh against Ipswich - he could’ve had a hat-trick but laid it off for Jake [Forster-Caskey] instead.

“Why can’t he get 20 goals this season? He got 10 last year in a team that struggled.

“If we’re successful and we play like we did against Ipswich, he will easily double that [goal tally]. And he’ll get the 20 goals with us in behind getting double figures.

“I don’t think you can forget Lee Novak - he had a bad time last year. He’s had another niggle, but when he’s fit, it’ll be those two fighting it out for places with Tony Watt as well, and everyone knows his pedigree.

“There’s competition all over the place and that’s just the front-line. The squad is taking shape.”

Holmes, who signed a new contract with the Addicks earlier this summer, also scored two stunning goals in the Ipswich rout.

His second, and Charlton’s sixth, was a free-kick from just outside the box.

Magennis wanted to take the set-piece, but Holmes ushered the big man away.

The winger added: “It’s a silly question - why is he even asking to take the ball off me?

“He always thinks it’s too close and says ‘just push it to the side and I’ll smash it’. But we saw the end product so I’ll keep taking them.”
