Millwall capped off their pre-season with a commanding 3-0 win over Granada.
Goals from Jed Wallace, Shaun Williams and Aiden O’Brien ensured Lions fans went home happy.
Here are five things we learned…
Steve Morison is still the main man
He showed that he has more to his game than just goals. The way he held the ball up and brought team-mates into play was the focal point of many Millwall attacks. The 33-year-old won almost everything in the air and although he did not get into as many dangerous positions as he would have liked, he worked tirelessly for his side.
Wallace and O’Brien can cause damage
At times, their decision making could have been better, but both looked dangerous throughout and will hope to have done enough to be named in the starting eleven at Nottingham Forest. The pair combined expertly for Millwall’s third goal. They didn’t give the Granada defence a moment’s peace.
The Lions have found their goal touch at last
Neil Harris said on Tuesday that he was not worried about the lack of goals Millwall have scored in pre-season and it had been 234 minutes without one before Wallace struck. The second goal showed everyone exactly what Millwall are about. Shaun Williams played a neat one-two with Wallace before slamming home from the edge of the box. The Lions seemed to have an element of composure that has been missing in recent weeks and from the moment Williams doubled their lead, the result was never in doubt.
Williams shines
His work-rate was outstanding, his passing was even better and scored a fine goal to cap a superb display. The midfielder retrieved the ball on numerous occasions, and showed a calm head that is needed in the middle of the pitch. You can see exactly why he was rewarded with a new contract in June and will no doubt play a crucial role for the Lions this season.
James Meredith looks a shrewd signing
An attack-minded full-back that loves to get forward. The summer signing from Bradford City produced a pleasing display in his first appearance for the Lions on home soil. Him and O’Brien showed a good understanding with each other and more performances like this will put pressure on Tony Craig for the left-back spot.
