Charlton were well-beaten by Norwich at the Valley on Tuesday evening.

The Canaries’ Championship class shone through as goals from Yanic Wildschut and Steven Naismith were enough to end Charlton’s winning pre-season run.

The Addicks should not feel too disheartened, though, Karl Robinson’s men played some eye-catching football at times.

But they did not have that extra bit of quality in the final third to trouble Norwich’s resolute back-line.

Here are five things we learned…

The emergence of Anfernee Dijksteel

The Dutch midfielder has been playing as a right-back throughout pre-season - and he has done a fine job.

Dijksteel, 20, had Norwich star Josh Murphy in his pocket, to the extent that the winger moved into the number 10 role to find more space. It was another dominating performance by Dijksteel, who Robinson wants to rival Chris Solly for the right-back spot.

Solly, who has a long history with knee injuries, is unlikely to be available for every game this season. And Robinson now sees Dijksteel as the person to step in when the Addicks vice-captain is unable to play.

Billy Clarke has not impressed

It’s pre-season, so you can’t take too much away from it. But against Norwich, and other teams this summer, Clarke has been very quiet.

Brought in from Bradford to add some much-needed creativity to Charlton’s attack, Clarke has not done much to get Addicks fans off their seats.

If you compare him to other summer signing, Tariqe Fosu, there is a massive difference in the impact both players have made.

Having said that, Clarke IS a proven League One attacker, who has played at Championship level, so surely, his best is yet to come in a Charlton shirt.

Another striker is needed

Normally if you have three strikers fighting for a starting berth, you won’t need another one. While Tony Watt, Lee Novak and Josh Magennis have their strengths, they are not 15 or 20-goal-a-season strikers.

The majority of teams that have won promotion, whether it be from League Two, League One or the Championship, have always had prolific forwards. At the moment, Charlton don’t.

Following Nicky Ajose’s loan exit, Robinson has said he wants to bring in another striker - and he must do so.

Naby Sarr is one of Charlton’s most improved players… ever

If you’d been told that Naby Sarr would be part of a Charlton squad about to go into their second season in League One, you wouldn't have believed it.

Sarr’s turnaround in form at the Valley is nothing short of remarkable. He put in another impressive display against Norwich. Barring an error that led to the second goal, he was brilliant.

He dominated, bullied and controlled Portugal international and former Premier League striker Nelson Oliveira.

This is a sentence Charlton fans thought they’d never hear, but: Naby Sarr is going to be a valuable player for the Addicks this season.

Charlton look light in wide areas

Mark Marshall’s knee injury has exposed a lack of options in wide positions. In terms of fit out-and-out wingers, Charlton only have Ricky Holmes and Fosu.

Cameron Stewart has been on trial with the club this summer, and could be signed up to compete for a place on the wing.

And while Karlan Ahearne-Grant can play out wide, he is better suited to a number 10 role.

Wingers are a massive part of Robinson’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, so Charlton need to address this issue before the transfer window closes.
