Charlton boss Karl Robinson is unlikely to sign a right-back due to the emergence of Anfernee Dijksteel.

Dijksteel, 20, has been playing in an unfamiliar full-back role in pre-season.

Robinson previously said he wanted to bring in cover for Chris Solly, however, the Liverpudlian believes the young Dutchman’s performances have been good enough to warrant a place in the senior squad this season.

The defensive midfielder dealt with Norwich winger Josh Murphy admirably in Charlton’s 2-0 home defeat on Tuesday evening.

When asked about Dijksteel’s display at right-back, Robinson said: “I’ve just been told I don't need another one!

“My answer to that was, we have a DNA here, it’s a progression of our own, of our youth.

“Why would I want to go and find another full-back if he’s performing like that? He was exceptional against Norwich.

“He’ll have bad games because he’s young, he’ll have better games with age. But certainly tonight, against better opposition, he performed well.”

Goals from Yanic Wildschut and Steven Naismith punished Aaron Barnes and Naby Sarr errors, respectively, to end Charlton’s four-game winning run in pre-season.

At times, the Addicks played some eye-catching football, but could not break down a firm Canaries defence.

Although, the home side should have been awarded a penalty when Norwich goalkeeper Michael McGovern brought down Ricky Holmes in the box.

Despite the defeat, Robinson was upbeat about his team’s performance.

He said: “I thought we were very good in the first-half - Norwich’s main players were playing.

“We moved the ball efficiently, and they didn't have many chances. Their first goal came from a slight error and a great finish by Wildschut - and the second goal was similar.

“We were poor in the first 15 minutes of the second-half. But I thought it was still a very good performance.”
