Defeat may have been a tough pill to swallow but Bromley tennis starlet Emma Raducanu will have learned plenty of lessons from her first experience of Junior Wimbledon.

The 14-year-old, one of the youngest players in the draw, lost 6-1 4-6 8-6 to Chinese Taipei’s En Shuo Liang in the second round of the girls’ competition having been given a wildcard into the draw by the Championships.

A student at Newstead Wood Grammar School, Raducanu beat Russia’s Anastasia Kharitonova in the first round before losing in a three-set marathon in the second round.

Both of the Bromley Tennis Centre’s opponents were at least two years older than Raducanu, and the junior was pleased with her performance.

“It hurts to lose 8-6 in such a close match, but at the beginning I couldn’t really find my rhythm and she hit it very hard and deep on the baseline, so I was constantly rushed,” she said.

“But after that I thought I fought really well, especially in the second and third sets.

“I obviously would have loved to win the match, but I'm happy with the way I played.

“I’m very happy, she was obviously two years older than me, much more experienced and she knew what to do at the crucial times.

“She kept being aggressive, kept attacking and could hit any spot she liked, which is something I need to learn for the future.”
