News Shopper broke the news on Friday that Charlton are interested in signing Peterborough star Marcus Maddison.

Addicks boss Karl Robinson has said he wants to get players through the door as soon as possible.

And Maddison would be a stellar addition to Robinson’s squad as he looks to mount a promotion push next season.

Here is everything you need to know about the Charlton transfer target…

What type of player is he?

Maddison would be able to play in all three positions of Robinson’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. He can play out wide or in the number 10 role.

He showed his creativity last season when he notched 17 assists in a Peterborough side that finished mid-table.

Charlton have been desperately short of creativity from midfield in recent years. While Andrew Crofts, Joe Aribo and Jake Forster-Caskey are known for their tireless work-rate, Maddison would bring a much-needed creative spark to the team.

What’s been said about him?

“I’d always buy exciting young English talent if I was at Leeds. The large fanbase would propel them to great heights. So yep for sure”. That was Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony’s answer when asked earlier this month whether he would sign Maddison if he owned Leeds.

Posh boss Grant McCann also paid tribute to his star man, dubbing him one of the best players in League One.

In April, he said: “On his day he is one of the best in this league, if not the best.

“We want to try to get the best out of him. He’s bringing a lot more to the table this year.”

What’s his situation at Peterborough?

Maddison has 12 months left on his deal and has been transfer listed by Peterborough. After three impressive seasons for the Posh, he is unlikely to see out the final year of his contract.

Part of Peterborough’s transfer policy includes buying young footballers from the non-league market and selling them on for a substantial profit.

Craig Mackail-Smith and Dwight Gayle were plucked from non-league clubs and then sold to Brighton and Crystal Palace after thriving for Peterborough.

What is the likelihood of Maddison playing at the Valley next season?

Maddison is attracting interest from Bolton and Sheffield United – both clubs will play in the Championship next season. That is an immediate disadvantage for the Addicks.

But News Shopper understands that if the Championship interest cools down, and Maddison stays in League One, then the Valley would be his preferred destination.

So it all depends on the offers he receives from clubs in England’s second tier.
