Millwall chairman John Berylson says Neil Harris is the best manager in Britain.

Harris, 39, guided the Lions to the Championship after their League One play-off final win over Bradford on Saturday.

Steve Morison’s 85th-minute winner was enough for Harris to seal promotion in just his second full managerial season.

And Berylson, who appointed Harris in 2015, said: “We spent five years in the Championship before, but this time, our plan is to spend a lot more time there and get it right.

“We have a good mix of people and I think I have the best manager in the UK. Neil and the team deserve all the credit.

Millwall celebrate promotion to the Championship

“Neil told me that when he was 50 years old, he wanted to be the manager of Millwall. Now, who thought it would happen when he was 37?

“So I said ‘are you going to do an Arsene Wenger kind of thing, can you do this for 25 years?’ He replied saying he could do it until he dies!”

Harris took temporary charge of a Millwall side in free-fall under Ian Holloway, and could not stop their relegation from the Championship.

But he impressed enough for Berylson to give him the job permanently before the season ended.

And fast forward two years - two play-off finals and a promotion is not a bad record for Harris to hold.

American businessman Berylson, 63, added: “I’ve watched Neil grow. When he was the interim manager, he made lots of mistakes.

“He didn’t want any part of the manager’s job at the time, he wanted to be the youth coach.

“But now, he doesn’t make mistakes. Look at the subs on Saturday - he knew the players that were going to lift the team.

“The team has had ups and downs but it’s been an exciting year. All the players played a part at some point in the season.”
