Not many British footballers play abroad nowadays.

The different lifestyle, language and football takes time to get used to. It can be a risk for the few Brits that leave.

But a 20-year-old Byron Webster fell out of love with football - until Czech minnows FK Banik Most came calling in 2007.

The two years in the Czech Republic paid off for Millwall defender Webster, who will try to help the Lions beat Bradford City in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

“I just got the opportunity to go there. I fell out with the manager in England, wasn’t interested in football, had the opportunity to go and I really enjoyed it,” he said. “It kick-started my career again.

“You learn a lot about yourself, life skills off the pitch, as well as a different style on the pitch. I’d say to any youngsters, if it’s not going well for them in England and there’s a chance to go abroad, then take that chance.

“I just went out there and fell back in love with the game. I was playing regularly, training without any pressure.

“The main pressure was put on ourselves. So I kind of got away with that. I didn’t know if anyone was hammering me because I didn’t know what they were saying!

“I learned a little bit of the language - the swear words.”

After moving back to England to sign for Doncaster in 2009, Webster, 30, had spells with Northampton and Yeovil before sealing a move to Millwall.

He has been an ever-present in Neil Harris’ side, helping them reach two play-off finals in as many years.

Steve Morison

Webster, who missed last season’s play-off final defeat to Barnsley with a hamstring injury, reckons Millwall will beat Bradford if strikers Lee Gregory and Steve Morison play well.

The pair have been terrorising League One defenders this season, scoring 36 goals between them.

“When those two perform well, we usually win,” added Webster.

“They set the tone for the whole team. There’s no getting away from it.

“There are not many better partnerships up top in this league so they’re massive for us.”
