Former Millwall manager Kenny Jackett always knew Neil Harris would become a top boss.

Jackett coached Harris for four years at Millwall, and the pair won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in 2010.

Now, Harris will lead his Millwall team out at Wembley for a second successive year in the League One play-off final on Saturday.

Jackett, who bossed the Lions for six years from 2007, told News Shopper: “Neil is an excellent manager, who has proved himself over the last couple of seasons.

“He deserves success with the way he’s gone about things and the effort he’s put in.

“I always felt he had a future in coaching and management and when I was there, he was well thought of at Millwall.

“Not just because of his playing career, but because of his character. He went into the Under-21 side and then took on the top job. He’s handled it very well.”

Harris has impressed since replacing Ian Holloway in the latter stages of their Championship season, which ended in relegation two years ago.

He has guided Millwall to the League One play-off final in his first two full managerial campaigns. The Lions missed out on promotion after losing 3-1 to Barnsley last May.

Harris’ men went on a 17-game unbeaten run earlier this season, beating Premier League clubs Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

When asked whether other clubs could swoop for Harris in the summer, Jackett, 55, said: “I don’t know, to be honest.

“Management is quite fickle sometimes. But he is a very, very good manager and has done an excellent job. He’s been the right fit for Millwall.”

Luck was not on Millwall’s side in the play-off final last year as they lost Byron Webster to injury in the warm-up, before left-back Joe Martin pulled up in the first-half.

Barnsley stormed into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes, and the Lions never recovered from their slow start.

Jackett will be at Wembley cheering on his former side, a club who he helped establish in England’s second tier, as they take on Bradford.

He added: “I’d love Millwall to win it – they were really unfortunate when they lost two of their back four last year.

“I sincerely hope that they make it into the Championship this time around. But I won’t make a score prediction as I don’t want to tempt fate!”
