Fifth of November turned out to be a bit of a damp squib for Welling United as a late Gosport Borough equaliser denied them all three points.

As painful as it was to fail to hold on, it would have been tough on the hosts if they had finished with nothing to show for their efforts.

Dean Morgan for Pierre Joseph-Dubois was the one change to the starting line up from the Wings team that won at Wealdstone seven days earlier.

There could have been a disaster for Welling in the opening seconds when Dan Wooden's effort from Warren Bentley's cross came back off the back post.

Another escape came soon after when Welling put together a good move that drew too many forward and a quick clearance sent Bentley away. He fired in a powerful effort from twenty yards only to see it fly back off the crossbar.

Bentley came close once more with a close range header at the far post but Chris Lewington made a superb reaction block.

This gave Welling a chance to counter attack and they took full advantage. Matt Fish found space down the right and crossed deep for Adam Coombes to head home from close range.

Josh Carmichael, who had spent a one month spell at Welling on loan, went down in the box but was deemed guilty of simulation and was booked. It looked harsh as, although his tumble was theatrical, it did appear that he was tripped.

Aaron Dawson then almost caught Lewington out with an attempted cross that swerved towards the far post but the Welling keeper recovered to tip round at the cost of a corner.

Having profited from a headed own goal one week earlier, they almost enjoyed similar fortune again at Gosport when Adam Wilde's diving header flew just wide.

Lyle Della-Verde then skinned his man and crossed but Adam Brice got back to touch wide with Coombes waiting to pounce.

Lewington was again in action as the first half drew to a close when, under heavy pressure, he touched a Ben Harding corner onto the top of the bar and over.

Brice still had time to fire over from twenty five yards before the half time break.

As has been the case often this season, Welling started the second half on the back foot but although they had plenty of possession, Gosport struggled to find the killer pass.

However, they were given a golden opportunity on around the hour mark when they were gifted a penalty. Although raised, Dean Leacock had little chance to get his arm out of the way of a close range flick however referee Marc Whaley pointed to the spot immediately.

Bentley stepped up but Lewington guessed correctly and flung out a left arm to push it round the post.

Dawson almost made the most of some calamity Welling defending but fired over from inside the box.

In a rare second half foray, Danny Waldren had a header easily saved from Della-Verde's free kick before Wooden tried his luck with a shot that Lewington saved with comfort.

It seemed that Welling were going to see the game out but a long ball over the middle, flicked on, sent substitute Ben Wright clear and he gave Lewington no chance with a crisp finish.

Smelling blood, Gosport went for an injury time winner but almost got caught out when Della-Verde broke and sent Coombes clear. Sadly for Welling the striker was left holding his head as his shot flew back off the top of the post.

That turned out to be the last chance of the match and the points were shared.
