Robbie Savage has questioned West Ham’s decision to sell James Tomkins to Crystal Palace in the summer.

Tomkins, a product of the West Ham youth system, made over 200 league appearances for the Hammers between 2008 and 2016.

Despite being a favourite amongst West Ham fans, Tomkins was sold to London rivals Palace in July for a fee in the region of £10m.

Former Wales international Savage has expressed his confusion at the decision to let Tomkins leave east London.

“West Ham are struggling defensively, Tomkins has gone to Crystal Palace and he is a decent player,” Savage, 41, told BT Sport.

“Why did they let him go? I think recruitment has been poor from West Ham.”

Ex-Hammers boss Harry Redknapp added: “He is a local boy as well, Tomkins. He’s a West Ham boy, loves the club, grew up and had been there since he was probably 10 years of age.”

Tomkins has played five Premier League games for Palace so far this season and scored his first goal for the club in the 4-1 thrashing over Stoke City.

Palace are unbeaten in five top-flight games and go into the international break eighth in the table, while West Ham have not won in over a month.

The two London clubs will come up against each other on October 15 when Slaven Bilic’s side travel to Selhurst Park.
