Shaun Williams knew from the moment the ball left his boot that Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Stephen Henderson was struggling to stop his halfway line strike.

The Millwall midfielder lobbed former Charlton stopper Henderson from 50 yards in what has been described as one of the best goals ever scored by a Lions player.

The stunning effort was Williams’ second of the season after he scored the opener against Sheffield United last weekend.

“They had been enjoying a lot of possession so when I got it I knew the keeper would be in a more advanced position,” Williams, 29, told the Millwall official website.

“I had a quick look up, saw that he was near the edge of his box and decided to have a go. I've tried it a few times before but have never had the right accuracy until Tuesday night!

“When I hit it I started wheeling away because I had a feeling that the keeper wasn't going to get it and lucky enough it cleared him and went in.

“It's the best goal I've ever scored and I'm delighted that the fans were there to see it.”

Williams has impressed boss Neil Harris with his early-season form and insisted he hopes to bring more goals to his game for Millwall.

He said: “I had a good pre-season and started the first few games well so I think the goal on Tuesday was a result of the confidence I've got at the moment.

“I'm going to keep playing my game as well as I can and hopefully I can score a few more this season.

“I've got to grips with playing in a 4-4-2 - something I'd never previously done before - and I'm really enjoying my football at the moment.

“While we had the blip at Peterborough, generally we've started the season well and hopefully we can continue that at Chesterfield on Saturday.”
