Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson said Ricky Holmes’ opener in the 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town was “out of this world”.

Holmes, who joined Charlton earlier in the summer from Northampton, found the far corner with a stunning strike at the Valley.

The 29-year-old then scored directly from a corner as the Addicks sealed their first League One win of the season.

When asked by News Shopper what he thought of Holmes’ performance, Jackson said: “I thought he was excellent.

“It was a wonderful goal but it’s not just about that. The energy he brings to the team is really important, he gets us up the pitch and into attacking positions so he’s a great outlet.

“He’s got himself into some good positions in every game so far without getting a shot off, but obviously he’s brought that and the first goal was out of this world really.

“For the corner the plan was to put it on the goalkeeper and pile the bodies in there to put him under pressure.

“He’ll probably tell you he picked the top bag out on purpose. I think the goalie will be disappointed but we’ll take it.”

Jackson, 34, also found the back of the net at the Valley on Tuesday to take his goal tally for Charlton to 52.

The midfielder insists he has not set himself any goal targets but says he would be delighted to enter double figures this season.

He added: “I haven’t set myself a target but I always feel if I’m in the side and can get myself in attacking positions then I will score goals because I like to think I’m a good finisher and quite calm when those opportunities do come.

“I feel I can contribute with goals but I’m not putting a number on it.

“But if I can get into double figures I’d be well pleased with that, believe me.”

Jackson was substituted during the Shrewsbury victory and revealed after the match that he was feeling his hamstring.

“I was just feeling my hamstring a little bit,” the Charlton veteran said.

“It’s nothing major at all but I felt with the state of the game and another game coming up on Saturday, that at my age I have to be very sensible with my body.

“I’ve had hamstring injuries before so I’m quite aware of the feelings I get in my body so I have to manage that.

“It was just a sensible call to get some fresh legs on to benefit the team and benefit myself in the long-run.”
