Russell Slade admits he would be ecstatic if Johnnie Jackson manages to equal his goal tally from the last time Charlton were in League One.

Skipper Jackson scored 12 league goals during the 2011/12 season as the Addicks secured automatic promotion to the Championship with over 100 points.

The 34-year-old has already netted two goals this term and when asked by News Shopper if Jackson can once again hit double figures, Slade said: “I’d be well happy if he could.

“With some of these older players, they learn to modify their games and be selective when they arrive in the box.

“Johnnie needs to keep arriving in the box and be selective with the timing. We know he’s capable of doing that and being a goal threat.

“Let’s hope he can get those double figures again, if he manages to do that I might just buy him a drink or two!”

Jackson’s second goal of the campaign came during Charlton’s comfortable 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town.

The midfielder took full advantage of a dangerous cross to slot home his 52nd goal for the club.

“I couldn’t be happier for Johnnie,” Slade, 55, added.

News Shopper:

“He’s been a great servant to the football club and in pre-season he worked as hard as anybody to get in the best possible shape for a campaign in this league.

“I have to be mindful because he’s played a lot of games. He was getting a bit tight out there so it was a good time to take him off.”

During the Shrewsbury victory Charlton fans directed several positive chants at Slade, who signed a three-year deal at the club in June.

And the former Cardiff City and Leyton Orient boss insists he feels at home in SE7 and wants the side to keep on improving.

“I’ve really taken to the football club, I don’t think I hide that,” Slade said.

“There’s a real heartbeat here and I feel as if I’m at home here.

“I’m really enjoying the start to it, even though on the pitch results hadn’t been quite what we wanted.

“But I think that’s sometimes the case when you try to build something. But I’ve had the support from everyone from day one.

“I want to grow something here and we need to keep improving and getting better. You can’t afford to stand still.”
