Nick Pope believes Charlton can get back on track and restore their Championship status under Russell Slade.

The Addicks were relegated to League One in April following a disastrous season under three separate managers.

The Valley hierarchy turned to Slade in June to turn the club’s fortunes around, with the former Cardiff and Leyton Orient boss signing a three-year deal.

Pope, who sealed a move to Premier League new boys Burnley earlier this week, only worked with Slade for a few weeks after the players returned from their summer breaks.

However, the young stopper says Slade is “honest and thoughtful” and believes the 55-year-old is the right man for the job.

“I only worked with Russell for a few weeks but he came across as a really honest and thoughtful person,” Pope told News Shopper.

“His door is always open for a chat which is important for players.

“He seems like the person the club needs right now. If anyone is going to take the club forward and back to the Championship it’s him.

“I think he’s the right man for the job – I cannot say anything bad about him to be honest.”

Slade, who began his managerial career at Notts County, left his role at Cardiff earlier in the summer ahead of taking the Charlton job.

He named Kevin Nugent as his assistant manager on Tuesday – the pair spent four years together at Leyton Orient.
