Charlton summer signing Ricky Holmes wants to excite Addicks fans this season with his style of play.

The 29-year-old signed a two-year deal with Charlton in June to end a productive spell at Northampton Town.

Holmes netted 11 goals for the Cobblers last season and was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.

The forward has been a bright influence in both of Charlton’s recent pre-season friendlies and says his end product is still to come.

“I want to pick us the ball and excite fans, that’s what I want to do and hopefully I can,” Holmes said after the 2-1 defeat to Bromley at Hayes Lane.

“The end product will come – we’ve only been together for a few weeks. We’ve got new players and we are still trying to understand each other’s ways of playing.”

The Addicks started their pre-season schedule with a 4-1 thrashing over Welling United but suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to National League side Bromley on Tuesday.

Holmes was critical of the performance, stating that his teammates were “not up to standards”.

When asked by News Shopper whether results are insignificant at this stage, Holmes said: “I think it’s about results if I’m honest.

“We want to get a winning mentality going early on and the gaffer has said exactly that.

“I didn’t get to watch much of the first-half but I’m sure the effort was there – we’ve got a team that are going to graft, that’s why the gaffer has put us all together.

“We want to win games so even if it is a friendly it’s a disappointing result. You should be competitive and want to win games. You’ve got to get a winning mentality and that’s not good enough.

“But let’s not get carried away with the result. The fans are going to talk – we’re talking amongst ourselves – we want to win football matches and that’s not up to the standard that we want to set so we need to up it.”

After being relegated from the Championship last season, Charlton are one of the favourites to bag promotion from League One during the 2016/17 campaign.

On Charlton’s tag as one of the favourites in the division, Holmes said: “It’s always going to be a tag because of the size of this club.

“Portsmouth have it every year and they haven’t got out of the league yet.

“I played at that club and I underachieved there so hopefully I can achieve something here and get promoted, it’s definitely possible.”

Holmes joined Charlton ten days after Slade was appointed manager of the club on a three-year contract.

The former Chelmsford City, Barnet and Portsmouth star says Slade, 55, wants players in the dressing room who are willing to put in a shift.

Holmes said: “I heard enough about Russell before I arrived, footballers talk and it’s a small world – I heard what he’s about.

“He just wants honest, hard-working players and I believe I give that. I’m sure we will get on well.”
