Charlton’s 0-0 draw at Bolton last night ended the club’s four-year stay in the Championship.

A disastrous season which started off with so much optimism has seen three managers in the Valley hotseat, embarrassing PR stunts, and ten defeats by three goals or more.

News Shopper looks at the five matches that doomed the Addicks to League One...

Brighton 3-2 Charlton – December 5

Charlton were two-nil up with five minutes played and could’ve killed the game just before half-time.

But, Brighton stopper David Stockdale saved well from Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

At 2-1, Patrick Bauer received a red card and despite leading with ten minutes to go, two quick-fire goals placed the Addicks back in the relegation zone.

Brighton were top of the Championship and unbeaten in the league so to inflict a first defeat on them would have done wonders for former interim boss Karel Fraeye’s team.

Charlton 2-2 Bolton - December 15

Probably still reeling from the effects of the Brighton game, Charlton yet again had a two-nil lead, but this time in 26 minutes, not five.

However, Ademola Lookman's brace was wasted as Bolton were level at the break.

An Emile Heskey goal and a 25-yard deflected Josh Vela strike stunned the Valley faithful.

A second-half performance, nowhere near matching the first 45 minutes, meant Charlton had to settle for a point against the Championship’s basement club.

Hull 6-0 Charlton - January 16

Jose Riga’s first game back in charge was one to forget - he hadn't taken a training session prior to the Yorkshire thumping.

He still stayed in the dugout and encouraged his new players on, though.

A Rhys Williams horror show in central defence, practically gifting Abel Hernandez a first-half hat-trick, gave Charlton no hope.

Coming off the back of a 5-0 thrashing at Huddersfield, the Hull demolition further drowned the players’ confidence.

Charlton 0-0 MK Dons - March 8

Despite ending a run of five winless matches against Brentford, other teams around Charlton won which made Tuesday’s clash with relegation rivals MK Dons even more important.

But, the South Londoners barely created any openings, having only one shot on target to show for.

Callum Harriott taken off too early, Lookman brought on too late and Yaya Sanogo’s red card in the 96th minute for elbowing Antony Kay summed up Charlton’s miserable night.

QPR 2-1 Charlton - April 9

After drawing with Ipswich in midweek, Charlton had to win to keep any realistic hopes of survival alive.

With the scores level, Igor Vetokele, Lookman and Harriott all spurned excellent chances to net the winner.

The Addicks dominated the contest but were undone by a last-gasp goal - and with Rotherham and Fulham winning - the gap from safety increased to ten points with only five games remaining.

It was the heartbreaking defeat at Loftus Road which made even the most positive of fans believe that any great escape was all but impossible.
