Jose Riga says he and the board will have a discussion about his future with Charlton on the brink of relegation.

A 60th-minute Johnny Russell header was enough to see off the Addicks who are now 11 points from safety - following today’s 1-0 defeat to Derby.

Their return to League One will be confirmed if they fail to beat Bolton on Tuesday.

Riga said: “We have to have a good discussion because everyone knows I appreciate the place and the club - there is passion everywhere.

“It won’t be a problem for me to build a team, I’ve done it before but we have to be real and see the way we want to build.

“And also which kind of responsibilities I’ll have.”

In the 19th minute, Nick Pope’s excellent double save denied Tom Ince and Chris Martin - the whole of the Valley stood up to applaud the young stopper for his heroics.

Charlton responded well to Derby’s early pressure as Callum Harriott’s shot, with his weaker foot, rifled just past the post.

Derby took the lead on the hour mark when Russell’s header beat Pope - it was the 20th time the Addicks have conceded from a corner this season.

Rod Fanni hit the post and Jorge Teixeira had a goal disallowed prior to the play-off hopeful’s opener.

Simon Makienok, a late substitute, could have got Charlton back on level terms but he somehow failed to connect with Harriott’s corner.

Riga was frustrated with Teixeira’s disallowed goal before Derby took the lead.

He said: “I’m sure, it’s just a jump, there’s no contact, nothing.

“It’s more easy to do it for Charlton – that’s been our situation for a few weeks.

“Then we switch off and you concede, after that we push and try to score because I never saw from my team, they kept going to get the result.

“It’s a big frustration. Everyone wants to see what this team can do.”

Johnnie Jackson was an unused sub today and has barely featured for the Addicks since returning from injury last month.

However, Riga insists his skipper still has an important role at the club.

He said: “When I arrived this time, he started with me, he got injured and after that the players in the team were doing very well - it was nothing to do with Jacko.

“Jacko has a very, very important role in the squad with his mentality.

“Sometimes you are not on the pitch but you're important in the changing room and training.”
