Callum Harriott’s brace in the 2-1 win at Brentford yesterday had Charlton hopefuls singing “we are staying up, we are staying up”.

The 22-year-old scored his first goals for the Addicks since Decemeber 6, 2014.

Harriott featured heavily in Charlton boss Jose Riga’s great escape two seasons ago but has only started three games under him in his second spell in charge.

His goals on either side of half-time at Griffin Park were vital as it ensured that 21st-placed MK Dons did not extend their seven-point gap from safety.

Here are five things we learned…

Harriott deserves to start in this Charlton team

A News Shopper blogger said last week that he should be starting regularly for the Addicks and yesterday he proved his worth.

His two goals not only reminded everyone what he is capable of, but they gave fans hope that maybe he can be the man to save Charlton again - like he did in 2014.

News Shopper:

It’s only one game but when Harriott plays like he did yesterday, he’s almost unstoppable.

Set-piece woes are not going away

Brentford’s 26th-minute equaliser was, you guessed it, from a corner. Yoann Barbet’s header was the sixth goal that Charlton have conceded from a set-piece in four games.

Riga’s not stupid, and he’s highlighted his annoyance at it before, but if they’re working on it in training - how long is it going to take until they go a game without conceding from one?

Jordan Cousins was desperately missed

Riga wanted Cousins, who captained the club yesterday, to feature so badly at Preston that he came off midway through the second-half. The injury ruled him out of the Reading defeat last week.

News Shopper:

He was back at Brentford and was absolutely superb. He won his tackles, attacked well and was a powerhouse when running with the ball.

The youngster just seems to have endless bundles of energy and he put it into effect yesterday.

He shone in Riga’s last spell at the club and he’s shining even brighter this time around.

Where is Ademola Lookman?

Well, we know where he is - the bench.

But, after signing a new long-term deal nearly two weeks ago, he hasn't played a single minute of football.

News Shopper:

Riga has acknowledged his obvious ability but seems reluctant to use him.

He won’t want to change a winning team for the crucial MK Dons game on Tuesday so Lookman may be waiting a little while longer before he gets another chance.

You will get arthritis if you sit in Brentford’s press box every week

People rightfully appreciate Brentford as one of the old fashioned grounds that are left in England.

However, if you were to sit in their cramped press box week-in-week-out then go and see a doctor as soon as possible.
