Millwall are more than capable of overturning a two-goal deficit when they travel to Oxford in the second leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area final tonight.

That is the verdict of defender Mark Beevers, who saw his side slip to a 2-0 defeat against the same opposition at the Den two weeks ago.

Oxford, currently third in League Two having lost just two of their last 12 league games, stamped their authority on the cup tie with Kemar Roofe’s first-half brace.

Despite the deficit, Beevers has urged his Millwall teammates to go into the clash at the Kassam Stadium with confidence.

He said: “It won’t be easy but if you look at our away form this season, I think we can go there with confidence.

“We are more than capable of getting three goals. We need to go there full of confidence and see what happens.

“It will be important for us not to get ahead of ourselves and go too gung-ho and thinking we need to score two quick goals.

“It is a 90 minute game and we need to keep it tight - there’s plenty of time to get those goals.”

Beevers, who signed for the Lions in 2013, has been a central figure in Neil Harris’s back four this season, featuring in 34 games already.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender put in another impressive display against Crewe at the weekend but admitted to being disappointed that victory was denied.

“Anyone who watched the game will have seen that we should have taken three points,” the 26-year-old said.

“We’ve missed numerous chances. But as I keep saying, it’s not alarming because we are creating them.

“If we wasn’t creating them it would be alarming, but we are. It’s only a matter of time before we start putting them away and turning over teams.

“It was just one of those games, we feel we should have come out with the three points.”
