Marvin Sordell believes Callum Harriott can turn Charlton’s season around following his successful loan spell at Colchester.

The Addicks head to Yorkshire tonight to take on Huddersfield in a relegation six-pointer.

They will have Harriott available again after he was cup-tied for the South Londoners’ FA Cup exit to Colchester on Saturday.

The youngster was a huge hit at the Essex-based club, scoring seven goals and making several assists.

Sordell, who was reunited with Harriott, told News Shopper: “I’m good friends with Callum from our time at Charlton.

“I don’t think he divides any opinions at Colchester because he was the best player here - when he came in, he was fantastic for us.

“I believe he can hopefully carry on that form for Charlton and help push them up the table.

Sordell joined the Addicks on a season-long loan from Bolton at the start of the 2013/14 season and ended up netting eight goals in 35 appearances.

Most of his strikes came towards the back-end of the campaign, under former boss Jose Riga.

Charlton only won once when Sordell scored and it was when he bagged a hat-trick in the vital 3-2 victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Colchester striker played for current Charlton interim boss Karel Fraeye when he was Riga’s assistant.

The 24-year-old added: “Karel was good to work with. Obviously Riga was very hands-on, he took all the training sessions and got the team ready with instructions on match days.

“Karel wasn’t exactly doing that and most assistants now are there to support, and that was the same thing with him.

“He’s in charge now but for how long?”

Sordell went on to describe his up-and-down season at Charlton.

He said: “The whole season was very mixed.

“At the time, I didn’t even know if I was going out on loan because I played a big part in Bolton’s preseason and scored quite a few goals.

“It didn’t start fantastically well at Charlton but it ended better and when Jose Riga came in, we had quite a few conversations and he really believed in me and gave me so much confidence.

“It showed on the pitch as I ended up scoring more goals.

“The only player that I’m still in touch with is Callum [Harriott] because since I was last there, it’s changed quite a bit.”

Despite a rich vein of form in the latter stages of the season, Sordell was mostly criticised by Addicks fans.

Under Chris Powell, he was in and out of the starting XI and his lack of goals angered supporters.

The former Burnley and Bolton star said: “I just tried to go about my business and at the end of the day you can’t control other people’s opinions.

“People may hear things that aren’t true but you can’t come out and say whether it is or not. You could do that but it would waste a lot of time.

“Some people want to believe certain things and you can’t control what a manager does or what he believes.

“At the end of the day, all I can concentrate on is working hard and doing what’s best for my career and trying to have a stable life for myself and family.”
