You’ll immediately read this and think: “You’re having us on”.

Well…

There was a lot of hype when Simon Makienok arrived at Charlton on a one-year loan deal from Serie A side Palermo in the summer.

And now it’s looking like all the hype has gone because of one bad game.

The 6ft 7ins giant hit the ground running against QPR and Derby in the first two league games of the season - getting an assist in both and linking up well with Tony Watt.

He picked up a hamstring injury at Wolves in August and was rushed back too quickly by former boss Guy Luzon which had a detrimental effect as Makienok was sidelined for over a month.

Just remember that this is the same man who barely played any football last season in Italy.

Initially, Makienok looked like real fan-favourite material – he was applauded off the pitch as he stayed behind to clap fans after the Addicks’ 3-0 home loss to Preston.

The Denmark international had a tough time against Ipswich, in front of the Sky TV cameras, where he was bullied by Town’s centre-backs and since then a bundle of criticism has flown his way.

Dominating displays against QPR, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday all seem to have been forgotten.

Makienok hasn't started a game since the 3-0 Ipswich defeat and when he was subbed on during the Bolton game on Tuesday, every header he won was sarcastically cheered by the Covered End.

Later on Twitter, a lot of people bemoaned supporters for jeering the out-of-form forward but they pay their money’s worth so can express their discontent in any way they see fit.

But then think, Makienok has come on for the last half an hour, he wants to do well but every time he’s successfully winning aerial duels, he hears 500-odd fans mocking him… AT A HOME MATCH?

It’s not the first time this season where a Charlton player has been jeered - Nick Pope for every catch he claimed against Huddersfield and Callum Harriott at Peterborough. It’s not nice or helpful.

Makienok could be recalled to the starting XI at Burnley tomorrow as interim boss Karel Fraeye might not want to risk Ademola Lookman with his hamstring injury.

If the big guy does start, you’ll see a massive smile on my face as I believe he’s still Charlton’s best striker.

He brings others into play, holds the ball up well and is good with it at his feet - the first touch isn't quite there yet but it can only improve.

He seems to play better when he has pace around him - Lookman - and the Birmingham game proved that when the youngster’s two chances came through Makienok’s dominance in the air.

When he’s isolated up top on his own, Middlesbrough and Ipswich being golden examples, he tends to struggle.

Charlton fans are basing Makienok as a player on ONE GAME and it’s frustrating.

Give him another chance and he’ll prove his worth - when he’s on his game, he’s unplayable.

Remember, 127-year-old Emile Heskey scored a goal at the Valley so anything is possible.
