Charlton interim head coach, Karel Fraeye believes his side were hard done by in a ‘disappointing’ defeat as the 10-men Addicks were stunned by a late Brighton comeback.

The visitors got off to a blistering start as they took the lead after just two minutes when Ademola Lookman skilfully turned Bruno, before firing home with his left foot.

Three minutes later, Reza Ghoochannejhad finished well from Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s low cross, as Charlton scored twice away from home for the first time in the league this season.

However, James Wilson pulled one back for Brighton just after half-time before Patrick Bauer was sent-off for fouling Bobby Zamora, who was through on goal.

Zamora then converted an equaliser with seven minutes remaining and just two minutes later, Tomer Hemed’s header squirmed into the net after Stephen Henderson had appeared to keep it out, to complete the hosts’ comeback.

And following the defeat, Fraeye bemoaned his side’s inability to covert a third before half-time as the Addicks were unable to bring any points back to the Valley.

“It’s very hard to take as we played very well first half and Brighton were lucky to only be 2-0 down at half-time,” said the 37-year-old.

“If we scored a third, we’d have gone home with three points – for sure.

“Brighton are unbeaten but if you see first half, we dominated them, we deserved more at half-time, “We were really unlucky to go home with nothing.”

Bauer’s second red card of the season was a bitter blow for Charlton, who already had fellow centre-half Harry Lennon substituted with a head injury, and Fraeye was unsure as to whether it was the correct decision by referee Keith Stroud.

He said: “I haven’t seen if it’s correct or not, but with the crowd getting behind the team they gained some confidence from the decision.

“They were pressing us after and then got the result.

“It’s a hard one for the players, because it was a big away performance, we scored two goals but have gone home with nothing.”

Charlton made four changes to the side that lost 3-0 to Ipswich last weekend and Fraeye did see the positives despite the lack of result, especially in 18-year-old Lookman, who again was the Addicks’ stand-out performer.

“We changed the tactics from last weekend’s game because we knew we could hurt them.

“Ademola did brilliant, he was in the U21 when I arrived, I asked to Jason if he could train with us.

“The only question you have with a young player is if he can do it in a game, he’s the same player in the training and in the games which is shown through his quality.

“He wants a long-term agreement with the club and I’m sure Ademola will become a very important player for Charlton Athletic.”
