Karel Fraeye admits Simon Makienok endured a frustrating afternoon against Ipswich last week, but insists the striker was hindered by some poor decisions.

The 25-year-old frontman, who is on loan from Italian outfit Palermo, was replaced in the second half by Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Makienok was criticised by Sky Sport’s punditry team and received a muted reception when he made his way off the pitch.

Charlton interim head coach Fraeye said: “It was not his best performance, he knows that.

“We chatted to him and made some analysis with him on Tuesday. He’s very critical of himself – he knows it was not good.

“But he was not helped by the circumstances.

“We looked back and if you see the number of fouls on him not given and the number of fouls he conceded against [Christophe] Berra – he got two or three fouls when he didn’t even touch the player.

“He got frustrated and it wasn’t a good influence for him.

“He knows it was not good and the only way is up and we need to work hard on all the players so we improve.”

When asked whether he expects a strong response from the Denmark international when Charlton travel to league leaders Brighton on Saturday, Fraeye added: “It’s up to him – Saturday is very important for us all to react [from last week].

“Obviously it’s the 5th of December, a very important day so we hope the Charlton Gods help us on Saturday and maybe we can be the first team to beat Brighton.

“They are a very good team and full of confidence.”
