Simon Makienok insists the Charlton camp has been boosted by a flood of positivity since Karel Fraeye took over as Interim Head Coach.

Fraeye, 37, took his first training session at Sparrows Lane on Monday, following the dismissal of Israeli boss Guy Luzon.

The Addicks have endured a dismal run and are winless in ten games, but Makienok said Fraeye made it clear that the squad must remain positive.

“It was one of the first things he said, that he wanted to see our smiles back,” Makienok, 24, said.

“That’s the way he thinks football players can perform if they are happy and enjoying themselves, so that was one of the main things.

“He came in with a lot of positive energy and smiles – he also came with his ideas and how he wants to play.

“If we are going to turn this around we need some positive players and smiling players.

“If we are doing that and can fight for each other we can turn it around on Saturday.”

The Denmark international has suffered a frustrating season with a hamstring injury impeding his ability to play a significant role for the club.

However, Makienok has returned from the treatment table in recent weeks and is hoping to play a big role in Charlton’s daunting trip to high-flying Middlesbrough on Saturday.

He added: “My injury has been good the last couple of weeks. I’ve been training fully and getting more game time, hopefully I’m ready for 90 minutes now.

“It’s been frustrating and a tough situation.

“This [Middlesbrough] is like a free game for us, no-one is going to judge us because everyone knows they’re a good side and very good at home.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to go there and give everything.”
