Neil Harris believes Millwall’s Den hoodoo is finally over after Shaun Williams’ injury time header sealed a 1-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy home success over Peterborough.

The game looked certain to be heading  to a penalty shootout until Williams popped up in the 92nd minute to head home from Carlos Edwards’ delivery.

That gave the Lions a vital first success on their own patch this season, leaving the manager to claim afterwards the club have put an end to a string of disappointing defeats in front of Millwall’s long suffering fans.

Harris said: “I think for me personally it puts to bed once and for all not being able to win at home.

“We will have a positive environment now. Yes, that was a big win for us, and the next game here against Southend will be massive.

“But we have to now continue our good away record in two tough games coming up and then continue what we produced tonight against Southend in our next home game.”

There might only have been 2,050 fans present to witness the victory but Harris felt it was more than deserved on the balance of play.

He explained: “First and foremost we played extremely well at times.

“I think you saw a little bit more freedom from the guys to play and express themselves.

“We saw huge amounts of quality, especially going forward. We saw a load of things we can still improve on.

“I lost count of the amount of chances we created, goal-scoring opportunities.

“It wasn’t just them, it was it was the quality to get into those positions and I was delighted.”

Harris was also keen to single out the contribution of Edwards on his long-awaited return to the team, as well as match winner Williams after he was dropped for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against Chesterfield.

The Den chief said: “It was about right that the goal we scored was a great ball by Carlos Edwards coming back in the team and Shaun Williams deserving the goal that he scored.

“Shaun is a great fella, he is a winner who wants to win and he takes it badly when he gets beat.

“I left him out on Saturday and he responded in the perfect manner. I thought his all-round game was excellent and he is a passer of the football, he wants to play.

“He is going to give the ball away at times.

“I accept that from him and I accept that sometimes our ball players are going to give the ball away. It is how you limit that and how effective they are when they have the ball. I thought tonight he might have given the ball away once all evening.”

On Edwards’ display, Harris added: “He is a great fella, great to have in the dressing room.

“It is great to have him back in the squad, great to have his leadership.

“He is not a big shouter, he is not a big talker but he is just calm.

“I think he will be the first to admit there was a little bit of rustiness in him at times, but that will improve with every game he plays. He will get better.

“He played some lovely passes, having said that a couple of the attacks we had towards the end of the game were balls he played slightly longer into the channel. He has got the ability and the knowledge to be able to mix his game up.”
